January 9, 2001: Thomson multimedia and Coding Technologies today announced the launch of a new, enhanced mp3 coder called "mp3PRO". mp3PRO is developed by Coding Technologies and will be licensed by Thomson Multimedia. By utilizing Coding Technologies' proprietary codec enhancement technology, mp3PRO offers substantially improved compression performance while maintaining compatibility with the existing mp3 format. Soft- and hardware implementations will be available from mid 2001 on.
