Figure consists of three parts – drum machine, bass and synthesizers. The user-friendly interface makes it possible to write music right on the way to work (or to university/school). That’s exactly what Natorst-Bös wants – for everyone, regardless of their abilities and experience, to be able to record music as easily as they go through the next level in Cut the Rope. The design mistakes of ReBirth are taken into account, Figure was developed at once for the iPhone, to make the use of the app easier and to reduce the number of buttons and switches per square centimeter.

The Swedish company Propellerhead, for some time, created real (Swedish design) gadgets for musicians, and then released two applications. The first one in 2010 – ReBirth – copied Techno Micro Composer’s functionality inside iPad almost without any changes, just like Korg did with their cassimilator. The second turned out to be more interesting, as Propellerhead head Ernst Natorst-Bös noted in an interview with the Guardian: “We use email in different ways, sitting at the computer or poking at the phone. It’s still email, but it’s different on every single device. It’s the same [with musical instruments].”

Abstract circles and squares on the surface of the iPad, with the help of which a composer can create music – this is roughly what the Belgian Beatsurfing looks like.

One of the beta-testers of this app was Russian musician Sasha Kholenko (DZA):

“A couple of years ago I had a free week and decided to go to Belgium to visit my old friends – Jon and Pascal from Herrmutt Lobby. Those guys were very busy at that time with writing alternative programs for various midi controllers, they made things that had nothing to do with music sound. For example, no one would use a Sony Playstation joystick to control a drum machine, or a DJ controller like that. How exactly the idea of making software for the iPad was born, I do not remember, but a year later I already had the first beta version of the program, which is an organic editor for building midi controllers and remotely control almost any device or software. Remarkably, this innovative software came out as a release from the Belgian electronic label Vlek Records”.

The Swiss electronic duo Yello decided to create an app instead of an album, in which any music track created is unique, but at the same time – sounds exactly like a band track.

Says Fingarilla app creator Anton Schneider:

“Yello have released an album that you can re-do the whole fuckin’ thing, and you can still hear Yello. I think musicians of the future won’t be releasing albums, they’ll be releasing the instruments they made the record on. That way you don’t have to worry about repeating the Skrillex sound – you download an album app that has a machine that generates the typical Skrillex sounds and you use it to bang somewhere in the track.”

A few weeks after Yellofier, the Ninja Tune label got a similar app – Jamm lets you make remixes of tracks by label musicians (Bonobo, for example) using samples collections and dozens of shuriken effects.

The Korg cassimilator (and other iOS products of the music corporation) is really handy as an application on the iPhone, at least that’s what the professional music media say.

The field for creating music is a square with X and Y coordinates, plus dozens of effects and 150 built-in sounds. The only thing that might be embarrassing is the $20 price tag. But after all, it’s a Korg.

Scape is the third collaborative project between Brian Eno and musician and developer Peter Chilvers (the other two, Bloom and Trope, were also about making music on the iPad).

The app is a collection of backgrounds, shapes, patterns and colors; the user can combine them as he sees fit, and different combinations actually make music.

There are about 80 elements in all – but they all appear as the user creates the music for as long as it takes. In addition to a gallery with your own tracks, Scape has 8 examples from Eno and Chilvers – and several playlists in the same vein.

Feed is a project of the Incidental team, which brings together developers, musicians, and designers, and deals with installations, performances, and applications, among other things.

Its idea is to manipulate and change the recorded sounds (or .wav blanks), to ring them, trim them, change their pitch and volume.

As in most cases, the interface (mostly consisting of multicolored circles, no more than six at a time) takes some getting used to, but it’s worth it.
